What is the Gospel?

The word 'gospel' just means good news, and that's just what The Gospel is!  The Gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ came to save mankind.  It is defined for us in the Bible as the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  As Christians, we are told to give the gospel to the whole world.

For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

1 Corinthians 15:3-4

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Mark 16:15

We are all sinners

Sin is anything we think, say or do that goes against God and His word.  the Bible tells us that everyone has sinned at some point, and it is pretty easy to confirm this because none of us has ever met a perfect person!

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

Romans 3:10

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God

Romans 3:23

Sin has a cost

Paying for our sin would mean an eternity in Hell, something that God went to great lengths to prevent.  God gives us a free gift to avoid that penalty.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:23

Jesus died to pay that cost

The truth is that none of us could ever pay that cost ourselves, so God did something amazing!  He sent his only begotten son to die in our place.  Jesus is the only person who could pay that cost because he was perfect and fully God.  God proved His love for us when Jesus died on the cross for our sins.

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8

For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

2 Corinthians 5:21

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 3:16

Salvation is by faith

Because there is nothing we could do to pay the cost of our sin, there is nothing that we can do to earn our salvation.  God offers the free gift of salvation and all we have to do is place our faith in Christ by believing in His death, burial and resurrection. Faith could simply be defined as the action of trust in response to belief.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9

God wants us to know our eternal destiny

God never desired for us to have to wonder or question about where we would spend eternity or about our relationship with Him.  One of the reasons He gave us the Bible is so that we could know Him and have certainty of our eternity.  We can have complete confidence in our future home in Heaven when we place our trust in Him for salvation.

These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

1 John 5:13

Call on Jesus now

If you have never placed your faith in Christ for salvation, then please do that now.  It is the best decision you could ever make!  The Bible tells us that all we have to do is pray and ask God to save us while believing in our heart that Jesus died for us and that God is who He says He is.  There is no magic words or prayer, it is a simple conversation that God wants you to have with Him.  When we come to him with a heart the believes His word and acknowledges Him as Lord, He will hear us.

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Romans 10:9-10

All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

John 6:37
